If I told you to close your eyes and picture an early Pontiac Firebird, most of you would probably envision the big "Chicken" on the hood of a Trans-Am, right? But I want you to go back further, before the Chicken, even before the Trans-Am, to the original production Firebird. You're going to enjoy the trip, because Benchmark Classics has a very, very nice '68 Firebird to show you the way.

Soon after the introduction of the '67 Chevrolet Camaro, GM's Excitement Division introduced a Pontiac Pony Car to call their own. The Poncho boys were certainly not newcomers to the game> after all, they'd practically started the hi performance wars with the introduction of the GTO just a few years before. However, their Pony Car entry was late to the game> they knew that to get everybody's attention, they'd need to make some real noise. That noise came in an extra-large size, from the Pontiac Motor Division's own 400 cubic inch big block. With its 330 horsepower WZ code engine running through a 4 speed, this 'bird did more than just flap its wings.

Benchmark Classic's 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 is a real survivor of the 60's. With just 16,000 miles showing on the odometer (reportedly the real mileage) this Firebird is a relic of a great automotive era. But unlike most relics, this one can scoot! And thanks to the pros at Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) we know exactly where this car came from and how it came equipped.

Benchmark's little '68 Bird came from GM's Lordstown, Ohio plant and was originally delivered to Decatur, Illinois' Barding Pontiac. It is painted in Sea Mist Green (sort of a light green-gray) and is optioned with both the "Firebird Custom Interior" in black and a matching black "Cordova" top.

Power from the stout 400 cu. in. mill is laid down through a 3.36 "Safe-T-Track" rear-end. And you and your passengers will know how fast that motor is turning, because this one is equipped with Pontiac's oh-so-cool Hood-Mounted tach, one of the most drool inducing toys of the late 60's!

With the "Rallye Gauge Cluster, center console, "Soft-Ray" windshield, original PMD (Pontiac Motor Division) wheels and new, period-correct, Red-line Wide Oval tires, there's no doubting that is a real Poncho. This is one of just 7563 original WZ code cars built in '68> how many can be left? And how many with this kind of mileage?

As you'll learn from the well-documented list of receipts, there's been much recent work done on this Firebird, with a great deal of detail and mechanical refurbishing. Included is a pair of famous Flowmaster Mufflers, fitted to the original dual factory exhaust: Its going to sound great!

To the Firebird faithful, there's no reason to explain what a good find this '68 400 is. For those of you not yet bitten by the Firebird bug, but who are looking for a Pony car that you won't see every day (and one can show its taillights to most of what's out there!) this is one to check out. It is waiting for you now at Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground, newly located in Middleton, WI.
