About the 1984 through 1987 Buick Turbo (T-Type, Grand National, and GNX)
Buick began introduction of a Turbo Regal as early as 1978, but not until 1984 was fuel injection introduced into the mix.
1984 and 1985 all black Grand Nationals and the multi-color T-Types were rated at 200 bhp with torque at 330 ft-lb @ 2400 rpm.
The introduction of an intercooler in 1986 helped boost performance until the 547 special edition GNX’s were built as “the Grand National to end all Grand Nationals” in late 1987.
The GNX was modified by ASC/McLaren Specialty Products until it produced 276 bhp @440 rpm and torque of 360 ft-lb @ 3000 rpm.
The GNX was proclaimed by “American Muscle Car” in 2003 as the “fastest accelerating American sedan ever”.
Until the 1990 Corvette ZR1 hit the streets these Turbo Buicks were the fastest American production cars in the 1980’s.
